A little bit about us...
I’m Kate, Managing Director of Blossom & Blush Bell Tents. I drink a lot of tea, love OS maps and spend any spare moment I get walking and eating pub meals with my husband Matt and our border collie Archie. I’m a Psychologist and have a BA in Ethnomusicology, and an MSc and PhD in Psychology. At the same time as running the business, I work as a Postdoctoral Research Assistant at the University of Hull, undertaking research into work-related stress. I guess you could say I like to keep busy...
I've also got lots of experience in the weddings & events industry, having worked as a professional vocalist for 16 years and helped my partner run his catering business for the past 6 years too, catering weddings, festivals and events.
Despite working a lot of hours, my favourite moments in life tend to occur when I’m in a field, by a lake or campfire at dusk or dawn, and I do my best to take time to enjoy the countryside; I feel restored when I hear the birds sing or cockerels in the morning. This love of the outdoors is what led me to setting up my business.
I’d camped for many years as an avid festival-goer in my twenties (you’d be hard-pushed to find a band I haven’t seen!), but then in my early thirties as a keen hill-walker I wanted somewhere a little cosier to lay my head after a day on the hills.
Enter the Bell Tent. I purchased my first bell tent whilst in my first year of my PhD, a beautiful 5 metre tent with a wood burning stove, and it felt like a palace. There is nothing as cosy as a warm, candle-lit bell tent with a wood burning stove at the end of a day’s fell walking.
I made a little website to hire out my precious tent, and before long I was receiving enquiries for large wedding bookings. so, I took the plunge, bought the tents and the rest is history!
We now have 50 tents, a summer team of ten staff, an amazing amount of glamping equipment and the business is going from strength to strength! Throughout the summer we travel all over the region to incredible venues, working outdoors in all weathers with so many amazing suppliers and clients. We arrive in a field and create a hotel! It’s busy and that can be hard when I’m also busy with my job, but it’s my creative outlet and I just love it!
I’m still every bit as passionate about bell tents and glamping as I was when I first started my business. I would spend every weekend in one if I could. Athough I now spend most weekends setting up tents for others instead of myself, I get so much joy out of making each tent spotless and beautiful, hearing the exclamations from brides and grooms as they enter the Honeymoon Bell for the first time, and from the brilliant feedback we receive about our tents, our team and the amazing fun our guests have had at weddings and events.
If you're planning your first glamping trip or event, get in touch! I love talking about all things outdoors and would be thrilled to recommend campsites, venues, and even walking routes and good pubs!
